Inauguration of Botany Society and PG Club
The combined inauguration of Botany Society and the PG Club was held on _ August 2009. Former Head of the department Dr. P. Dayanandan gave the inaugural speech on “The grand unification”. The talk brought to limelight the scientific insights of Darwin’s path breaking ideology on evolution put forward 150 years ago. The amalgamation of image, illustrations and interpretations was a perfect icing on the cake to celebrate Darwin’s 200th birth centenary.
Workshop for Non-Biology Science Faculty
The department conducted a two-day workshop on Basics of Biotechnology to the Chemistry and Physics department teaching faculty of Madras Christian College on the 30th and 31st October 2009.

Inauguration of Botany Society
The Botany Society inaugural function was held on 17th July 2007. Prof. Dr. Anand, D. Sc., Director, CAS in Botany, University of Madras, Chennai visited the Department as the Chief Guest and delivered a lecture on ‘Microbes of the Millennium" to the entire student assembly in the gallery. True to the tradition the fresher's meet was held and the faculty were introduced to the new students.
Inauguration of PG Botany Club
The PG Botany Club inaugural was held on 27th July 2007. Dr. Spurgeon Anand Raj, Professor and Director of School of Genetics, Osmania University, Hyderabad delivered the inaugural lecture on the topic ‘Gene Therapy'.
Students from II M.Sc.va continue to present seminars on various topics related to rapidly advancing biology and plant biotechnology. The seminars have been extremely informative and meaningful to the PG students who participate in the seminar meetings with enthusiasm and interest to learn.
The monotony of student seminars is at times interrupted by periodic Guest Lectures given by visiting scientists and professors. Dr. A. K. Srivastava of the Bribal Sahni Institute of Paleobotany gave a special talk on the ‘Glossopteris Flora of India' on 6th December 2007. Dr. C. Kunnhi Kannan Scientist - D and Dr. N. Venkatasubramaniam Scientist - D from the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore visited the department and a special lecture was given to the PG students on the flora of Silent Valley National Park by Dr. C. Kunnhi Kannan.
The faculty and students organized a one day seminar on the topic ‘Currents trends in Plant Biotechnology' on 18th February 2008. Eminent scientists / biotechnologists participated and presented papers related to plant biotechnology to a host of students and faculty drawn from various colleges in city.
II and III B.Sc. students have participated actively in the various inter-collegiate competitions organized by City Colleges (Madhulika- S. D. N.B. Vaishnav College, Chrompet, LANTANA-Ethiraj College, Chennai, GENOTSAV-Loyola College, Chennai and CYNOSURE-Stella Maris College, Chennai) and won deserving prizes trophies and over all shields for their performance in such events as paper presentation, quiz, biocartooning, floral arrangement, ad-zap, plant identification, rangoli etc. The traditional Dr. K. R. Venkatasubban inter-collegiate oratorical competition, the ‘CAPPARIS' inter-collegiate cultural festival, the Botany Day and the Society Valedictory function are going to be held in the ensuing months.
33 PG students have participated in a seminar on Biotechnology organized by the Department of Biotechnology, Anna University on 11th and 12th September 2007 in collaboration with the British Council and received participatory certificates. Besides selected II M. Sc. students attended a two day Workshop/ Seminar orgnised by the Centre for Knowledge Systems (CIKS) on invitation. Miss. Anu Annama Mammen (II M.Sc.), Mr. Muthu Karthick (I M. Sc.) and Miss. Lavanya (III B.Sc.) have participated in a one day conference organized jointly by United States Information Service (USIS) and Vivekananda Institute of Tropical Mycology (VINSTROM), Vivekananda College, Mylapore.
